Ayurveda History

Ayurveda or The Veda of Ayu (The Science of Life) is the traditional medicines of India. It is prevalent from the ancient times. Charak says Ayurveda was revealed by the one and only Lord Brahma-The Creator, while Sushruta stated that Ayurveda was delivered even before creation. Ayurveda is recognized as Upveda related to either Rig-Veda or Atharva-Veda. Rishi Kashyap considers Ayurveda as the fifth Veda with topmost among them. Charak concludes that Ayurveda is sashwat (Eternal) with untraceable beginning.

  • Ayurveda is the oldest science of healing. Hence Ayurveda is also called a science of life.
  • Ayurveda therapeutic methods use natural substances, oils and herbal medications. Thus Free from the side effects on the body.
  • Accepting the benefits of Ayurveda, it is preferred worldwide over other methods of treatments.
  • It cures the diseases and also beneficial to the body.

Branches Of Ayurveda

Initially Lord Brahma expressed eight parts of Ayurveda:

  • Bal Chikitsa (Obstetrics/Paediatrics)
  • Kaya Chikitsa (Generak Medicine)
  • Shalya Chikitsa (Surgery)
  • Graha Chikitsa (Psychiatry)
  • Shalakya Chikitsa (ENT and Cephalic Disease)
  • Vish Chikitsa (Toxicology)
  • Vajikarana (Aphrodisiac Treatment)
  • Rasayana (Rejuvenation Therepy)

Five Bhutas

It is stated in Vedas that our human body consist of five bhutas which are:

  • Aakash (Ether)
  • Vayu (Air)
  • Agni (Fire)
  • Jal (Water)
  • Prithvi (Earth)

Theory Of Tridosha

As soon as life begins in the body Vata, Pitta and Kapha emerges and governs the biological functions. Healthy body is a balance of all these three Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Vata Dosh: It governs all movement and processes in our mind and body including Blood Flow, Breathing and Movements of thoughts in our mind.

Pitta Dosh: The Heat energy in our body, it manifests itself in our metabolism.

Kapha Dosh: This dosha governs Nourishment, Growth, Lubrication, Stamina, Ability to feel contentment. In access it can cause Sluggishness, Lack of motivation, Heaviness in mind and body and Excessive sleep.

SEVEN DHATUS

Ayurveda believes seven Dhatus

1. RAS [ BODY FLUIDS]

2.RAKT [ BLOOD ELEMENTS]

3.MAANS [ MUSCLES, TENDON etc.]

4.MEDA [ ADIPOSE TISSUES]

5.MAAJA [ NERVES]

6.ASTHI [ BONES]

7.SHUKRA [ SPERMS, OVA, REGENRATIVE TISSUES]

MALAS [ WASTE EXCRETION]

Ayurveda believes seven Dhatus

Malas [ waste excretion] are the catabolic process of TRI DOSHA [VAT, PITTA AND COUGH].

Ayurvedic Treatment

1. RAS RASAYAN: Rejuvenation therapy is used in critical illness

2. KUPI PAKAV: Where Murcury along with other minerals and metals are sublimated.

3. BHASMA AND PISHTI:

BHASMA: Detoxified and Purified dry substances by grinding with Swars and Quath.

PISHTI: Fine powder made by the process of Trituration of the powder.

4. AASVA: Without making decoctions, prepared from the fresh dried Herbs. Self generated Alcohol and Yeast is produced. It is quickly absorbed in the intestines.

5. ARISHTA: By making the decoctions in the solution of Jaggery or sugar. After the fermentation It contains 10% of alcohol.

6. KWATH: Certain combination of the drugs are made into the coarse powder and kept the Preparation in KASAYA is called KWATH.

7. GUGGLU: It comes from the Resin of Commphora Mukul. It is useful in Pain Management.

8. TAILA [OIL]: TAILA [ OIL] enters into the skin through skin pores.

KSHEER PAK: Taila [oil] is processed with the cow milk. It dialates the skin pores Enters into the skin more rapidly.

9. CHURAN: Herbs dried and churn minutely and repeatedly, turn into powder form.
